It's been a few months since the last SELF newsletter. We have all been busy
with different projects, but we have finally managed to write down an update on

During an intensive three day period, participants from the Phillipines, Mexico, Tanzania, USA, and many other countries around the world, not excluding Spain itself, gathered around the Free Knowledge, Free Technology conference in Barcelona. In the last month two new servers have been added to the infrastructure of the SELF Project. The machines have been kindly provided by Sun-AMD and AT Computing. Both servers are located in the Amsterdam area and administered by David Jacovkis in collaboration with the TEG team.

Both servers are running Debian stable with a basic barebone install. On the server that hosts beta.selfplatform.eu we installed only the minimum requirements for Zope/Plone. This will be the main server for the public Beta version of the platform. At the same time the development team is moving to gnowsys 1.0 working on Postgres and with version control. This is expected to improve drastically the performance and response time of the platform.

1. SELF Open Documentary Contest

In the first half of 2008 SELF will organise an Open Documentary Contest to encourage visual artists around the world to participate in the production of a short documentary about Free Software and Open Standards. The aim of the contest is to allow amateurs as well as professionals to engage in the process of documentary creation in competition with one another, thus create high quality short documentaries. The awarded works, assessed by a panel of prominent people from the Free Software and art fields, will be available at the SELF Platform as part of the SELF collection of educational materials on Free Software and Open Standards.

The SELF organisation has received feedback on the first periodic review meeting held mid-September during an expert review meeting with the European Commission. "The review gave an interesting picture of the project," the reviewer Alexis Monville writes. "The review was served by good quality documents and presentations." He gave assessments on various parts of the project. "The project is going well on its way. The slight delay on the development of the platform (WP6) and on the content development (WP7) is compensated by the anticipation of the dissemination (WP9) and community building (WP10) packages."

Advanced international educational platform goes live

Free courses and a professional environment for teachers

A milestone for education on Free Software and Open Standards has been reached. On September 5th 2007 the beta version of the SELF Platform goes live. The official launch is taking place during a conference on Free Software in Education in the Netherlands, accompanied by satellite launch events in Sweden, Bulgaria, Argentina, Mexico and India with workshops and conferences.

The SELF Platform has been developed by a global team of non-profit organisations, universities and volunteers engaged in the SELF Project, an initiative for the collaborative sharing and creation of free educational and training materials on Free Software and Open Standards. Users, primarily learners and teachers, are enabled to assemble selections of learning contents and create custom-made learning material for lessons in their language. The Platform is launched in beta stage to involve the growing community in optimising the tool.
