Results

In the first year of the SELF Project several studies have been performed and definitions have been made which should lay the foundations for a long-term platform. Upon that we have initiated the development of the SELF Platform. Here we present a summary of the results and deliverables as were published at that time. Some of those results have later been updated to include for new insights and further discussions within the SELF expert groups or teams.

Mission

The SELF Platform aims to be the central platform with high quality educational and training materials about Free Software and Open Standards. It is based on world-class Free Software technologies that permit both reading and publishing free materials, and is driven by a worldwide community.

The SELF Platform has two main functions. It is simultaneously a knowledge base and a collaborative production facility: On the one hand, it provides information, educational and training materials that can be presented in different languages and forms: from course texts, presentations, e-learning programmes and platforms to tutor software, e-books, instructional and educational videos and manuals.

Founding Principles

We have put into action a set of founding principles that reflect our shared thoughts and ideas as a basis for the development of the platform. These founding principles help guide our work over time and are the means by which we articulate what is and has been intrinsically important to the organisation.

1. Sharing Knowledge

We share, create, stimulate and promote knowledge in the area of Free Software and Open Standards. Knowledge shared freely becomes much more valuable. For this reason, the materials on the SELF platform are available to everyone free of charge and can be used, adapted, modified, updated, translated, as defined in the Licensing Policy.

European Commision

European Commission

The European Commission supports the SELF project for the initial set up of the platform and the first educational and training materials. European research activities are structured around consecutive four-year programmes, or so-called Framework Programmes. The Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) sets out the priorities - including the Information Society Technologies (IST) priority - for the period 2002-2006.

These priorities have been identified on the basis of a set of common criteria reflecting the major concerns of increasing industrial competitiveness and the quality of life for European citizens in a global information society.
