Guidelines

The SELF Open Documentary Contest has very few rules and regulations. We encourage you to use your imagination and creativity freely to create the best works possible. However, in order to fairly judge all works, we have set some basic guidelines that you need to be aware of.
  1. Participation
Participation is open and free to all individuals, group of individuals or production houses and organisations willing to abide by these guidelines. Members of the jury and members of the SELF Consortium may not participate in the contest.

No reimbursement is provided by the SELF Project for the production of the documentary, and the SELF Project reserves the right to use any of the documentaries uploaded for advertisement of the SELF Platform. However, in case the documentary is used as a part of a promotional campaign for the project, the author(s) will always be properly attributed.

  2. Valuable works
The length of the short documentary should not exceed 5 minutes. The documentary should contain a link to the project website, http://selfproject.eu in a place where you find it suitable.
  3. Language
The official language of the contest is English, and all works should be submitted in English, or have English subtitles. However, we encourage participants to separately make translations in their local language of the documentaries. Even if you submit a documentary in English, we strongly recommend that you add English subtitles in order that hearing impaired viewers have equal access to the material.
  4. Video clip format
The documentary should be submitted to the jury in Ogg Theora format. Ogg Theora is a freely available encoding for videos and embodies the freedom of Free Software, which is why we require it for submissions. You can convert your video files to Ogg Theora by using the ffmpeg2theora software, and the Play Ogg! campaign has some information on how you install codecs to play Ogg Theora videos. If for some reason, you can not submit your documentary in Ogg Theora format, you can also mail a DVD with the documentary to the jury, and we will assist in converting it to Ogg Theora.
  5. License restrictions
The documentary must be released under one of the following licenses: CC (by-sa) or Free Art License.

Only original works, or works for which the author holds the copyrights, licensed in this way, will be considered in the contest.

  6. Company logos
In case the participant is an agency or an organisation, placing their logo is permitted but only for a short while to provide proper attribution during the 30 seconds heading and ending parts of the documentary.
  7. Submission deadline
All submissions must be made by the 30th of june 2008 to be considered in the contest.
  8. Jury
The jury is comprised of a wide range of people from the industry and community, and they will base the projects based on the interpretation and presentation of the philosophy and principals of the SELF project and the ideology of Free knowledge, as well as originality of idea, inspiration, artistic merit and creativity. The decision of the jury can not be overruled.
